Our dirt is cleaner than your kitchen...
Take a ride with us as we compare our Dirt Bags™ locally made Colorado substrate vs the leading bag from Competitor X. No offense to Competitor X but this is some seriously good stuff. We think our dirt doesn't stink.
This experiment will have two bins each of Dirt Bags™ substrate and Competitor X. We will be using Mushroom Saloon grow bins for this test.
To start, I split one colonized grain bag of dung loving mushroom spawn between the four clean and sterile bins. Then I added the substrate for the experiment making sure to clearly mark which substrate was in which bin. I formed each box into a Saloon Style mound and sealed them with the correct humidity. Two bins will be used for photo cataloguing and two will be left alone without being moved. Mycelium hates being moved.
Competitor X
One of the leading brands of substrate in the field. Designed for growing dung loving mushrooms in a grow bin.
Dirt Bags™
Our own locally crafted substrate from Colorado. This substrate is designed for dung loving mushrooms in a grow bin.
Check in - Day 4
I checked on the bins today and both have clearly taken to colonization.
Competitor X
You can see the mycelium is happy and white. There are large patches of substrate, but colonization looks like it is progressing. Not bad for four days.
Dirt Bags™
You can really see the mycelium popping in the Dirt Bags bins. The grains have turned into large fluffy white clusters and more of the substrate has been colonized.
Check in - Day 8
We are still very early in the race but Competitor X needs to step up a gear. Colonization is continuing in both bins with puffy white grains showing throughout. That's some healthy mycelial growth.
Competitor X
The grain is getting fluffier and starting to reach hyphae (its fingers/tongue almost) through the substrate. The Mycelium is waking up and colonization is on track for about a month.
Dirt Bags™
The grains have puffed and fluffed mightily. There are almost no bare patches of substrate left in the mound. We are nowhere near done but colonization is going very fast. The substrate has really accelerated growth compared to Competitor X.
